John Benson-Smith held the title Northern Chef of the Year and was a former regular judge on BBC TV`s Masterchef. Based in Manchester, he is Consultant Executive Chef to Manchester City Football Club since their move to their magnificent new stadium five years ago, the stadium now has a highly successful catering/dining and event programme.

As one of Loyd Grossman’s UK leading chefs involved in the on-going fight to improve food in the NHS John was chosen by Tony Blair as one of only six leading chefs on the Better Hospital Food Initiative.
A determined Yorkshire lad, John Benson-Smith trained in France with the famous Louis Outhier and drew inspiration from working with other well-known chefs including Michael Quin, Peter Chandler and Nico Ladenis. Known as `Super Chef` at Manchester’s celebrity filled Victoria & Albert Hotel where he spent five years, John produced food in his signature style with imagination and flair. He was instrumental in putting Manchester on the important food map and as his efforts were recognised he achieved high accolades.
Returning to his roots in Yorkshire John opened Hazlewood Castle - a former monastery, in 1997. He says `Converting the Castle which had no electricity, gas, water or road was a challenge, it was a huge nightmare.` The Castle became a highly successful business combining luxury hotel, conference and banqueting centre, restaurant and a centre for cookery courses. John left Hazlewood to begin a new project in Jersey which opened in 2006; he was also consultant to the Santa Ponsa Country Club in Palma, Spain. John is a Master Chef of Great Britain, and has worked as chef consultant to many major food manufacturers and producers including GNER, Nestle and Walkers Sensations Crisps where he was engaged as a range flavour developer. He has successfully endorsed and promoted a range of products that are appropriate to his lifestyle and his expertise. John is a first rate demonstrator and much in demand this includes demonstrating as Neff Chef (he was their ambassador for two years), the BBC Good Food Show and the Ideal Homes Exhibition; he works with leading brands such as Philips, Prestige, Waitrose, Marks & Spencers , Land Rover and Rösle. His inexhaustible energy and genuine love of the hospitality industry make him a valuable asset to many companies.
John has run two hugely successful cookery schools; one was a dedicated cookery school in York and the other in Jersey. John regularly makes appearances in the media and on TV and writes for various newspapers and magazines, he is an accomplished speaker and demonstrates all over the UK at high profile media events.
